Mark Sliavin , of blessed memory
He was 18 when he died. He left behind parents, a brother and a
sister. He was born in the Soviet Union, and his wrestling
achievements (in the up to 74 kg category) were considerable from an
early age.
In February 1972, he was Russia`s youth champion in the Greco-Roman
style, and he was even invited to take part in the Olympic team at
large. He studied at the Minsk Physical Training Institute. His
teachers and friends tried to prevent him from immigrating to
Israel, but he did not give up.
In May 1972, he immigrated to Israel with his family and went
to live in Bnei Brak. He studied Hebrew at the Shefaim Ulpan and
joined the "Hapoel Tel Aviv" wrestling team. Following a special
test, he was able to join the Munich delegation, for the first and
last Olympics of his life.
He was buried in Kiryat Shaul.

Moshe
Weinberg, of
blessed memory
At 33 years old, Moshe
Weinberg left behind a wife and child. He was Israeli
born.Moshe’s sporting career began at a young age in
“Hapoel Haifa” and was also considered an excellent
wrestler both in the wrestling society and as part of
Israel’s National Team.
It was due to him and his skills that in the 60’s the
Carmel region had one of the best wrestling groups in
the country.For 8 consecutive years Moshe held the title
of champion in his age group – both in youth and as an
adult – for Freeform and Greek – Roman Styles. He
represented Israel in International competitions and won
a gold medal at the Macabia Games.
After completing his compulsory military service, Moshe
studies physical education at the Wingate institute
before becoming a member of the teaching staff and later
a member of the management team at the institute.
Moshe coached “Hapoel Tel Aviv” wrestling group as well
as the National Wrestling team. He was dedicated to the
training of two Russian immigrants – Eliezer Halfin and
Mark Slavin who fell with him in Munich.

Eliezer Halfin , of
blessed memory
He was 24 when he died. He left behind parents and a sister.
He was born in the Soviet Union and was a mechanic by
profession.For 11 years, he engaged in free-style,
lightweight wrestling (up to 68 kg).
He was ranked fourth in the Russian youth championship. He
immigrated with his family from the Soviet Union in 1969 and
settled in Tel Aviv. He proved himself an outstanding
wrestler in the ranks of "Hapoel Tel Aviv" and the
national team.
He finished in 12th place in the world free-style
championships held in 1971 in Bulgaria. He was ranked second
in the international tournament held in 1972 in Greece and
finished third in the competi-tion in Bucharest. Taking part
in the Twentieth Olympic Games was the realization of a
dream for him. He was buried in Kiryat Shaul`s cemetery.

Yosef Gutfreund, of blessed memory
He was 40 when he died. He left behind a wife and two
daughters. Yoseph was born in Romania, where he attended
medical school. He aspired to be a veterinarian, but
quickly switched to sports and excelled as a wrestler.
After he immigrated to Israel, he joined the "Hapoel
Jerusalem" Association. He dealt in commerce, but he
devoted most of his time to sports. He organized his
association`s heavy athletics division. He completed a
course in international refereeing and his achievements
in the field were considerable.
He served as a referee at the 1968 Tokyo Olympic Games
and at the world championships in India and Bulgaria. He
was invited by the twentieth Olympic Organizing
Committee to referee the wrestling at the Munich Olympic
Games.
He was laid to rest in Jerusalem`s Har Menuhot cemetery.
